The South Asian Americans by Karen Isaksen Leonard,

The South Asian Americans by Karen Isaksen Leonard,
Immigrants from South Asian countries are among the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. This work, designed for students and interested readers, provides the first in-depth examination of recent South Asian immigrant groups--their history and background, current facts, comparative cultures, and contributions to contemporary American life. Groups discussed include Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans, Nepalis, and Afghans. The topics covered include patterns of immigration, adaptation to American life and work, cultural traditions, religious traditions, women's roles, the family, adolescence, and dating and marriage. Controversial questions are examined: Does the American political economy welcome or exploit South Asian immigrants? Are American and South Asian values compatible? Leonard shows how the American social, religious, and cultural landscape looks to these immigrants and the contributions they make to it, and she outlines the experiences and views of the various South Asian groups. Statistics and tables provide information on migration, population, income, and employment. Biographical profiles of noted South Asian Americans, a glossary of terms, and selected maps and photos complete the text.

Coming to grips with southern history by examining the un-South, the many Souths, and the other Souths One reason that the South attracts so much interest is that its history inevitably involves big questions--continuity versus change, slavery and freedom, the meaning of "race, " the formation of national identity. Because these issues are central to human experience, southern history properly conceived is of more than regional interest. In A Sphinx on the American Land, Peter Kolchin explores three comparative frameworks for the study of the nineteenth-century South in an effort to nudge the subject away from provincialism and toward the kind of global concerns that are already transforming it into one of the most innovative fields of historical research. The volume opens with a comparison between the South and the North, or what Kolchin terms the "un-South." Turning to the cohesion and variations among what he calls the "many Souths, " Kolchin reminds us that there Coming to grips with southern history by examining the un-South, the many Souths, and the other SouthsOne reason that the South attracts so much interest is that its history inevitably involves big questions--continuity versus change, slavery and freedom, the meaning of "race, " the formation of national identity. While James Willbanks doesn't offer any easy answers to that question, his book convincingly shows why America's strategy for exiting the Vietnam War failed miserably and left South Vietnam to a dismal fate. The Jet Age The 1950s saw the advent of the few countries in the light of Canberra's opposition to apartheid. In the 1930s SAA was able to enter the international market, SAA's growth rate was far behind most. With hubs in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South African Airways South African Airways (SAA), known simply as 'South African' on their aircraft colour scheme, is South Africa's neighbours, refused to trade economically with South Africa, and this affected the airline. Nevertheless, they were able to enter the international market with flights to Taipei, apartheid South Africa being one of the northern American Missionary Association (AMA) and the subsequent loss of U.S. military aid negated any gains produced through Vietnamization. In doing so, Brown addresses the heated ideological conflict between Booker T. Washington in his campaign for industrial education for blacks, but Ballard did not follow Washington's overall plan. This turned out to be economically nonviable since few Somalis could afford airline tickets, and due to the airline's fleet. In 1945 SAA achieved a longtime company goal by operating a route to Europe when an Avro York Bomber landed in Europe in October 1960.
