Multiple User Interfaces: Multi-Devices, Cross-Platform and Context-Awareness by Ahmed Seffah,
Today s communication systems consist of a bewildering array of devices and technologies. Mobile phones, PDAs, personal computers, corporate servers, Internet sites, even wearable devices all of these compete for our attention and require us to interact with them in different ways. A Multiple User Interface (MUI) helps with this variety of communication systems and devices by offering a coherent, integrated user experience across platforms. A MUI manages and coordinates services provided to the user through multiple devices and platforms. In addition, it adapts the view of the information to the computing platform in use. The following questions and more are addressed in "Multiple User Interfaces: What kinds of design methods are needed for building MUIs?How can we enable users to customise a device? How can the customisation of one device be reflected on all of the other devices available to the user? What is the best way to deal with device-specific constraints while assuring maintainability and cross-platform consistency of interfaces? How can we build interfaces that dynamically respond to changes in the environment, such as variations in network connectivity, user location, ambient sound and lighting conditions? The authors, who represent a wide range of research expertise in both industry and academia, introduce design and development frameworks for multi-device, cross-platform and context-aware systems. These frameworks are valuable to researchers and practitioners in usability and software engineering, and to anyone interested in the problem of developing and evaluating MUIs. Designers and developers, students and educators will find this book useful for itsapplied and theoretical content, supported by well-established HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) methodologies.

Java Network Programming and Distributed Computing by David Reilly,
Java Network Programming and Distributed Computing by David Reilly,
"Java(TM) Network Programming and Distributed Computing is an accessible introduction to the changing face of networking theory, Java(TM) technology, and the fundamental elements of the Java networking API. With the explosive growth of the Internet, Web applications, and Web services, the majority of today's programs and applications require some form of networking. Because it was created with extensive networking features, the Java programming language is uniquely suited for network programming and distributed computing. Whether you are a Java devotee who needs a solid working knowledge of network programming or a network programmer needing to apply your existing skills to Java, this how-to guide is the one book you will want to keep close at hand. You will learn the basic concepts involved with networking and the practical application of the skills necessary to be an effective Java network programmer. An accelerated guide to networking API, "Java(TM) Network Programming and Distributed Computing also serves as a comprehensive, example-rich reference. You will learn to maximize the API structure through in-depth coverage of: The architecture of the Internet and TCP/IP Java's input/output system How to write to clients and servers using the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and TCPThe advantages of multi-threaded applicationsHow to implement network protocols and see examples of client/server implementationsHTTP and how to write server-side Java applications for the WebDistributed computing technologies such as Remote Method Invocation (RMI) and CORBAHow to access e-mail using the extensive and powerful JavaMail(TM) API This book's coverage of advanced topics such asinput/output streaming and multi-threading allows even the most experienced Java developers to sharpen their skills.

Multi-user - Multi-user operating systems allow multiple users to utilize the computer and run programs at the same time. All time-sharing systems are multi-user systems, but most batch processing systems for mainframes were too, to avoid leaving the expensive CPU idle while it waited for I/O operations to complete.

Pointing device - A pointing device is any computer hardware component that allows a user to input spatial (ie, continuous and multi-dimensional) data to a computer. CAD systems and graphical user interfaces (GUI) allow the user to control and provide data to the computer using physical gestures - point, click, and drag - typically by moving a hand-held mouse across the surface of the physical desktop and activating switches on the mouse.

MUD - In computer gaming, a MUD (multi-user dungeon, dimension, or sometimes domain) is a multi-player computer game that combines elements of role-playing games, hack and slash style computer games, and social instant messaging chat rooms. Typically running on a bulletin board system or Internet server, the game is usually text driven, where players read descriptions of rooms, objects, events, other characters, and computer-controlled creatures or non-player characters (NPCs) in a virtual world.

Mob (computer gaming) - A mob is a type of non-player character (NPC) or monster in a computer role-playing game (especially MMORPGs). Mob is not to be confused with MOB (more often considered an acronym of Movable Object Block, a term for any on-screen moving object, or sprite, stemming from its use in the earliest text-based multi-user dungeons (MUDs)).
